Module 3 of 8

Workplace safety

10 minutes

Greenhouse work is physical. Most accidents can be avoided by following simple rules and speaking up in time.

Heat and hydration

  • It can get very hot inside the greenhouse, especially in summer.
  • Drink water often, even if you're not thirsty.
  • If you feel dizzy, have a headache, nausea or confusion, stop and tell someone immediately.

Equipment and tools

  • Use the protective equipment you are given (gloves, footwear, etc.).
  • Only use carts, platforms or ladders if you've been trained on them.
  • Carry and store knives and clippers as instructed.

Chemicals and signage

Products are sometimes applied in certain areas. Respect the signs and don't enter a posted area until you're told it's safe.

Take care of your body

  • When lifting boxes, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
  • Repetitive tasks tire your hands and shoulders: take the breaks and stretches you're taught.
  • Report any injury, even if it seems small.

In Canada, workers have the right to know the hazards of their job, to participate in safety, and to refuse work they believe is unsafe without being punished for it.
